Bookclub - July Edition

Read: The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Date of meet up: 7/28/11
Location: Panera Bread
Number of attendents: 5

Everyone loved the book. No one was crazy about the way it ended but we all agreed, we felt it was more realistic that there wasn’t like this great happy ending. Corrina did NOT like Skeeter at all, which was surprising. She said she felt that she was too “self involved” and she never moved “past herself”. We were all like “Huh. Okay.” I think everyone was surprised she didn’t like Skeeter. But, I have to hand it to her, we all talked about it, she stood behind how she felt and was able to defend her statement. Which, that always makes for a good debate.

We talked about meeting at the library (it’s free and we could bring stuff to eat)everyone seemed to be for it. They’d like to do it at the Middletown library though because they said it’s easier to find then Hamilton and bigger. If not, they were totally okay with continuing to do it at Panera. Panera wasn’t that crowded and the staff was really nice to us. There was actually another book club meeting there at the same time (but they had like 10-12 people) Or we can try it at the Hamilton library. No one seemed to mind where we did it.

Camille suggested rotating houses (she belonged to a book club that did that) and seemed comfortable inviting strangers into her home. I told her, maybe one we grew a bit (had more people we were all comfortable with) we could do something like that but for now, I wanted to keep it public.

Everyone is excited to see the movie so we’re all going to try to go on 8/10/11 – the night it opens.

They’d like to make it a social group as well – to see movies, have dinner or whatever. A lot of them belong to couples clubs and would like to have some type of club where they do things with just girlfriends. I was totally up for that.

I was so happy when I left Panera. I felt that we had a great meet up and I can't wait to do it again!

August book will be: The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls.
